ASEAN officials convene in Manila to prepare November summit

Senior officials from the 10 member-states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will meet in Manila this week to discuss preparations for the leaders' summit next month.

DFA Undersecretary Enrique Manalo will chair the joint consultative meeting from October 11 to 13 to discuss the proposed outcome of the documents that will be released during the 31st ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings.

The logistic preparations for the summit will also be on the agenda of the meeting, the DFA said.

Senior officials from the ministries in charge of foreign affairs, economy and socio-cultural affairs of the ASEAN will attend the meeting.

The Philippine delegation will be composed of Manalo, DSWD Undersecretary Florita Villar, DTI Assistant Secretary Anna Maria Diaz-Robeniol and Philippine Permanent Representative to the ASEAN Ambassador Elizabeth Buensuceso.

After the joint consultation meeting, the ASEAN senior officials will meet with their counterparts from China, Japan and South Korea.

They will also have meetings with senior officials of the East Asia Summit, including Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia and the US.

The other meetings will also focus on the outcome of documents for the 20th ASEAN Plus Three Summit and 12th East Asia Summit in November.

US President Donald Trump is expected to attend the summit in Manila as part of his Asia tour, including China, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam.
