EU, Mexico Conclude Latest Round Of FTA Talks

The EU and Mexico have concluded a sixth round of negotiations toward a new free trade agreement (FTA). The round was held in Mexico City from November 25 to December 1.

According to the European Commission, negotiators held talks on all issues and made progress on key issues. These included market access for goods, services, and public procurement, as well as trade, the investment court system, sustainable development, energy and raw materials, and anti-corruption.

The Commission said that it's committed to concluding a highly ambitious deal before the end of 2017. It said that it will work together with Mexico to try to solve the work that remains to be done.

The negotiating teams will meet again in the week beginning December 18.

In 1997, a Global Agreement between the EU and Mexico entered into force. It includes trade rules that were later developed into the current FTA, in force since October 2000. Negotiations toward a new FTA launched in May 2016.
