Japan decided Tuesday to relax its ban on exporting weapons to benefit its ailing defense companies, according to local media.

It is the first such change to the country's virtual arms export ban, a move that would revive a proposal made under a previous prime minister last year.

According to Kyodo news, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura is expected to release a statement regarding the review of the ban at a news conference after the decision on easing the restrictions on arms exports is made at a meeting of the Security Council of Japan.

Currently, Japan has banned selling weapons to communist states, countries subject to embargo under the UN's resolutions and countries involved in international conflicts.

The rule was introduced in 1967 by then Prime Minister Eisaku Sato and tightened into a virtually blanket ban in 1976.
