MOSCOW, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Russia imposed a temporary ban Wednesday on cattle import from several EU countries after the outbreak of Schmallenberg virus there.

According to the food safety and sanitary watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor, the ban has been introduced on the import of live cattle and cattle products from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.

On Jan. 17, Rosselkhoznadzor has already imposed temporary restrictions on imports of small cattle and their genetic materials from Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium because of the virus.

The watchdog said the same measures would be applied to supplies of cattle from other European countries if the virus is found there.

Schmallenberg virus, named after the German city where it was first identified in August 2011, is spread by blood-sucking insects. It could cause fever, gastrointestinal disorder, a sharp drop of milk production and miscarriages.
