Syria Continues Procedures for Accession to WTO

Damascus, (SANA)_ Syria's Ministry of Economy and Trade in cooperation with the concerned parties continue procedures for accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The Ministry has planned for holding several activities during 2011 such as workshops for parliamentarians, pressmen, commercial and industrial factors in Damascus and the Syrian provinces, Director of the WTO Directorate at the Ministry Salma al-Sayyad said Sunday.

She added that a regional workshop including representatives from the Arab countries acceding to the WTO or in the stage of accession to be informed of the comprehensive guide of the WTO agreements were launched recently and for exchanging experiences and expertise in this regard.

Al-Sayyad said the directorate is in regard of completing a memorandum of foreign trade system and preparing technical cooperation protocols with a number of Arab and foreign countries to make use of their expertise in the field of joining the WTO.

Accession to the WTO would contribute to creating new long-term opportunities, promoting investment flows, improving economic growth rates, diversifying industry and deepening trade relations with major trading partners to conclude bilateral agreements and facilitate the process of integration in the global economy.

In 2010, Syria has made an important step when it gained observer status in W TO as an initial step to get the full membership.

In a case of the acquisition of full membership, Syrian products can access to markets of 152 countries within a large economic space which poses 99 % of the world production in addition to encouraging investment in the participating countries, expanding the competition circle and activating international trade among members and then determining the laws governing the process of trade exchange in the world.
