Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian delegation at the Annual Conference of the World Parliament (IPU, Inter-Parliamentary Union) urged the organisation to create a transparent and a fair world trade system.

"In addition, the system should be non-discriminative, inclusive and concerned about the welfare of developing countries," said Arif Budimanta, an Indonesian legislative member of commission XI.

The world parliamentary conference held at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, from 15 to 16 November 2012, carried the following theme - Back to Basics: Linking Politics and Commerce. The conference discussed the linkages between free trade, and poverty reduction and employment.

During the meeting, it was revealed that the present economic crisis could be more complex. Inequality, non-tariff and domestic policies are increasing, and they can create challenges in the future, Arif added.

During the meeting, the Indonesian delegation expressed their views. Arif Budimanta conveyed some messages which were well-received by the participants and were finally adopted in the meeting's resolution.

In addition, a transparent and a fair world trade system should be created, since the previous free trade agenda did not have a significant impact on poverty reduction.

A total of 69 parliamentary delegations (from the IPU member countries) attended the forum. In addition, relevant personnel from the European Parliament, the French Speaking Nations Parliamentary Association, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Council of Europe Parliamentary Association also attended the forum. The forum was also graced by state observers, 20 permanent representative governments in Geneva and the World Bank.

At the end of 2013, Indonesia will host a WTO ministerial meeting. The Indonesian delegation urged the world parliament members (of the IPU) to resume the Doha Round negotiations that have been stalled for years.

"Is is through negotiations that a world trade system can be fair and in favour of developing countries," Arif said.

In particular, the Indonesian legislative agency urged the government to prepare a meeting agenda, in the interest of the national economy.
