Greening the chemical and fertilizer industry: A competitive leverage for Vietnamese agriculture

Green transformation is not only a solution to address climate change but also a driving force for improving production efficiency, increasing value, and enhancing competitiveness.

Speaking at the seminar "Greening the Chemical and Fertilizer Industry: Practical Issues and Solutions," Mr. Hoang Quang Phong, Vice President of the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), stated that the chemical and fertilizer industry plays a crucial role in Viet Nam's agricultural production. However, it is also an industry that consumes a significant amount of natural resources, generating large greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution. Therefore, successfully implementing a green transformation in the chemical and fertilizer industry is becoming an urgent task, requiring decisive and coordinated action from the entire political system, businesses, and the people.

"Greening chemical and fertilizer production through the use of renewable materials, energy saving and emission reduction to protect the environment, and the application of modern technology will bring great significance and benefits, helping to boost economic growth, solve social problems, and overcome environmental pollution," Mr. Hoang Quang Phong informed.

In particular, Viet Nam has a significant advantage in agricultural development, with several Vietnamese agricultural products such as rice, coffee, tea, and cocoa being exported to many markets around the world. Therefore, greening the chemical industry in general and the fertilizer industry in particular plays a crucial role. This not only facilitates chemical companies in establishing their position and enhancing their competitiveness, but also provides opportunities for Vietnam's agricultural sector to assert its position in the global market.

Sharing the same viewpoint, from a business perspective, Mr. Phung Ngoc Bo - Head of the Technical Department - Viet Nam Chemical Corporation, stated that in the context of the world facing increasingly severe challenges regarding climate change, environmental pollution, resource depletion, and the demands of international integration, green transformation has become an inevitable development trend for all industries and sectors, especially for fundamental industries such as chemicals.

"Experience has proven that green transformation is not only a solution to climate change but also a driving force for improving production efficiency, increasing value, and enhancing the long-term competitiveness of products," Mr. Phung Ngoc Bo informed.

Despite being considered a trend, the greening of the chemical and fertilizer industry is facing many difficulties. Mr. Pham Huy Nam Son – Deputy Director of the Chemical Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) – stated that the investment costs for green and clean technologies remain high, while the majority of Vietnamese chemical enterprises are small and medium-sized, limited in financial resources and access to long-term capital. The technological level and management capacity of some enterprises do not yet meet requirements; technological innovation is slow, and there is a heavy reliance on imported technology.

Furthermore, awareness of green chemistry and sustainable development is still inadequate in some businesses, while supporting mechanisms and policies such as green credit, tax incentives, support for technological innovation, and human resource training still need further improvement and synchronization.

Regarding solutions, Mr. Ha Van Thang, Chairman of the Viet Nam Agricultural Business Council (VCAC), noted that to effectively manage and replicate the greening model in chemical production, encouragement is needed for businesses to invest in organic fertilizer technology; and mechanisms to support the transition from chemical fertilizers to organic microbial fertilizers.

Simultaneously, production units need to standardize the process of using microbial organic fertilizers; monitor the quality of fertilizers circulating in the market. At the same time, establish linkages between businesses, cooperatives, and farmers; and integrate microbial organic fertilizers with clean, traceable agricultural products.

According to Mr. Ha Van Thang, changing and raising awareness is the most important step, requiring technical training for farmers and a shift in mindset from "short-term productivity" to "long-term efficiency." A comprehensive solution encompassing technology, management, and environmental protection is truly the core element in promoting the effectiveness of greening the chemical and fertilizer industry.
