India surpasses China to become the world's largest rice producer
07/01/2026 959Indian Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that India has surpassed China to become the world's largest rice producer.
According to him, India's rice production reached 150.18 million tons in the 2024-2025 crop year, compared to China's 145.28 million tons, which is an unprecedented achievement.
The announcement came as Minister Chouhan unveiled 184 new varieties across 25 crop types developed by the Agricultural Research Council of India at an event in the capital.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Chouhan said that India has achieved great success in developing high-yield crop varieties and has transformed from a food-scarce country into a global food supplier.
Minister Chouhan noted that India has sufficient reserves to ensure food security. He also instructed officials to ensure that new crop varieties are quickly made available to farmers so they can improve productivity and ensure better quality agricultural products.
Mr. Chouhan stated that India has entered a new phase of its agricultural revolution thanks to climate-resilient crop varieties and urged scientists to focus on increasing the production of beans and oilseeds to achieve self-sufficiency.
