Increase in rice exports from Vietnam
27/08/2011 121VNEconomyNews.com - Yesterday at a press conference, held by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Vietnam Food Association, the present status of Vietnam’s rice exports were stated to have touched nearly five million tons this year with a turnover of US$2.3 billion.
Rice exports have seen an increase of 11 percent in quantity and 22 percent in value this year as compared to the same period last year.
It is expected that rice exports will reach eight million tons this year.
Nguyen Thanh Bien, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade said the ministry has instructed businesses to stockpile enough rice so as to stabilize the market price if and when necessary. At present, businesses have a stockpile of 1.3 million tons of rice.
Rice prices in shops and supermarkets, as per the price subsidized program, are 10 percent lower than in normal markets of Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Can Tho City.
