Chile ratifies FTA with Turkey
22/11/2010 86SANTIAGO, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Chilean Senate on Thursday ratified a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Turkey signed last year.
Chile became the first Latin American country on signing a FTA with Turkey, which represents an access to southeast Europe, Russia and west Asia.
Senator Hernan Larrain, president of the Senate Foreign Affairs Commission, said the agreement will mainly benefit the mining, agriculture, fishing and forestry sectors.
Under the trade deal, Chile will give Turkey a tax free access to 94.3 percent of its products, and will enjoy tax free treatment for 80.7 percent of its products, including copper bars, fish oil, cigarettes and wood fiber tabs.
Senator Carlos Cantero said the FTA with Turkey "is a corridor linking Marmara, Aegean and Black Seas, allowing us to access interesting markets which appreciate and value the Chilean products, such as the wines and fruits."
