Pork producers in Russia are considering a significant increase in production of the red meat in the coming years despite a heavy reduction in import duties for live pigs that came into effect when the country joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Russia's accession to the WTO late last year resulted in live pig import duties falling to just 5% from the previous level of 40%, which led to a number of domestic pork producers threatening to halt construction of new hog farms through fear of being uncompetitive in the local market.
