JAKARTA, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's Agriculture Ministry on Tuesday announced that the implementation of a decree on foreign vegetable and fruit quarantine will be postponed.
Agriculture Minister Siswono told a press conference that the decree was supposed to be implemented on March 19. "However, due to several considerations, the implementation is delayed by three months, meaning that the decree will be effective on June 19," said Siswono.
According to him, the government needs to provide time to stakeholders and trade partnering countries in preparing equipment and facilities such as warehouse, cold storage and transportation vehicle.
"If those things are not ready and we force the implementation on time, it is expected that it will derange distribution of fruit and vegetable," said Siswono.
He said that when the decree implemented, there will be only three ports and one airport that serve as entrance gate of the commodities.
"The ports are Belawan (in North Sumatra province), Tanjung Perak (in East Java province) and Makassar (in South Sulawesi), while the airport is Soekarno Hatta (in Jakarta)," said Siswono.
He said that those facilities are selected as they have better quarantine system than other ports and airports, so that it will make surveillance system easier.
He added that the commodities are forbidden to enter via the main port of Tanjung Priok in Jakarta as it is too crowded, making surveillance more difficult.
