JAKARTA, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government will counter Japan's planned complaint in WTO over the restriction on nickel exports, a minister said here on Wednesday.

The announcement followed the statement from a senior official of the Japanese Trade Ministry to take the issue to the WTO should a compromise be made to remove the restriction.

"In the WTO, (we) will prepare our best lawyers to defend our interest," Industry Minister Muhammad Sulaiman Hidayat said.

The Indonesian government on May 6 imposed a restriction on the export of unprocessed nickel along with 13 other metal ores, and plans to expand the limit by up to 65 metal ores, non-metal and mineral products.

The policy rules that miners should build smelters and pay a 20- percent export tax before shipping the mines' products.

The policy aims at boosting downstream industry and increase added values.

"We consider that this policy is right. We do not ban export, but only limit the export for the benefit of our national interest, " said Hidayat.

Nevertheless, the minister said that it is also possible for Indonesia and Japan to discuss for a solution.
