Pranghang Sereirith, Acting Director General of Techo Sen Institute of MPWT on Tuesday held a meeting with the Japanese delegation led by Hiroyuki Tokito, Second Secretary of EoJ in Cambodia to discuss ways and means of enhancing the development in various sectors. Others who took part in the meeting include leaders of the institution, relevant civil servants, JICA representatives and senior officials from MPWT.

During the discussion, Sereirith urged the Japanese delegation to examine the possibility of enhancing the development of the education system, technology, human resources development, navigation skills, modernisation curriculum and creating more trainers for future sustainability development of the Kingdom.

Tokito positively responded by accepting Sereirith’s proposal to explore the chances of supporting and strengthening cooperation in various sectors through the provision of technical assistance and credit offers from the Japanese Government.

Earlier, Koy Sodany, Standing Secretary of State of MPWT also organised a workshop with a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) led by Miyahara Ai, Senior Representative of JICA in Cambodia to establish a masterplan for technical assistance of the transport infrastructure in the country.

The statement issued on January 8 mentioned that the meeting was held to discuss the development of a transport infrastructure master plan to provide technical assistance to support key projects including the infrastructure master plan, the urban rail network master plan, the public transportation master plan as well as the project to improve traffic safety and reduce the rate of road accident in the Kingdom.

The infrastructure and industrial division of JICA Cambodia told Khmer Times that the MPWT and JICA have conducted this meeting to exchange opinions on the next technical cooperation project for urban transport in Phnom Penh, scheduled to take place sometime in mid this year.

Both Cambodia and Japan plan to update the urban transport masterplan with Phnom Penh Capital Administration (PPCA), MPWT and related ministries towards a sustainable urban environment in the town, the statement added.

Based on ‘The Project for Comprehensive Urban Transport Plan in Phnom Penh Capital City’s report, the objectives were to formulate a comprehensive urban transport plan for PPCA of which the target year is 2035 as well as to conduct a pre-feasibility study (pre-F/S) on the priority project.

In addition, recommendations for promoting were made for strengthening and improving the implementation capacity of the urban transport-related agencies. In this way, there would be reassurance of the effectiveness of the study results and the realization of the proposed urban transport plans in Phnom Penh.
