Vietnam earned 1.1 billion USD from seafood exports to China in the first half of this year, up 45% from the same period last year, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said Thursday.
With this surge, China has overtaken the US to become Vietnam’s largest seafood importer for the first time.
Vietnam’s seafood export revenue to the US rose 18% over last year to 905 million USD. In May alone, Vietnam earned 195 million USD from exporting seafood to the US, marking a 61% increase compared to April and the highest monthly value since the beginning of the year.
However, following this sudden spike, the US market quickly cooled down. In June, Vietnam’s seafood exports to the US dropped 18% year-on-year.
Overall, in the first half of the year, Vietnam’s total seafood export value fetched 4.4 billion USD, up 7% from 2024.
