The review of tax policy is taking place against the backdrop of President Trump's efforts to improve his low approval ratings for his economic management.
On February 17, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer signaled that the Trump administration is ready to consider adjusting broad tariffs on steel and aluminum.
US government officials are working to narrow the scope of the tariffs. These tariffs currently target not only raw metals but also dozens of finished products containing these components.
According to sources, the business community has reported that calculating current tariffs is extremely complex. Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has also called for a reduction in these tariffs as part of a pending trade agreement with the United States. The White House has informed businesses about the adjustment roadmap, but the specific timing and technical details have yet to be announced.
While leaving open the possibility of technical adjustments, Mr. Greer affirmed that the core tariff framework for metals would remain in place, and assessed that the policy had been "very successful" in boosting domestic production.

In 2025, President Trump imposed a 50% tariff on imported steel and aluminum, a move that US officials claimed was aimed at China's overcapacity. However, this measure severely impacted other major trading partners, including Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and the EU.
The taxable list was subsequently expanded to include derivative products containing these metals, creating an administrative burden for businesses as they had to determine the percentage of these materials in goods imported from abroad.
