Vietnam's trade with members of the European Union (EU) is predicted to reach $40 billion in 2013 with a trade surplus of over $17 billion or an annual increase of 21 percent.

In the first nine months this year, the country's trade with the EU was recorded at $28.5 billion, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MIT).

In the nine-month period, the nation's exports to the EU hit $20 billion and imports from the EU were estimated at $8.5 billion.

The EU has the fastest growth among Vietnam's export markets, rising by 26 percent over the same period last year.

Vietnam's major EU export markets in 2013 include Germany with an estimated export value of $4.6 billion, the UK with $3.3 billion, the Netherlands with $2.7 billion, France with $2 billion, according to the ministry.
