US may delay China tariff hike

American and Chinese negotiators are reportedly working to delay a new round of US tariffs on Chinese imports set to kick in on December 15. The Wall Street Journal says this is so they can continue talks even if they can't reach a deal by the date.

US President Donald Trump has threatened additional tariffs on 160 billion dollars' worth of Chinese goods, such as smartphones and clothing.

A deal between the two sides remains elusive, with the countries at odds over issues including how much American farm products China will buy, and how to go about removing tariffs.

The US newspaper reports that Trump hasn't made a final decision on the planned levy hike.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow also said on Tuesday that "there is no definitive decision" yet on the tariffs.

Observers are watching to see if Washington goes ahead with the tariff hike in a few days, and how they could further impact the global economy.
