Pakistan becomes Viet Nam's top tea importer
15/03/2012 117HA NOI – Pakistan is Viet Nam's largest tea importer, said a representative of the Africa, Western and Southern Asia Market Department at a meeting about tea trade between Viet Nam and Pakistan .
The meeting was hosted online yesterday by the Africa, Western and Southern Asia Markets Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) and the Pakistan Tea Association.
About 3,100 tonnes of tea have been exported to Pakistan, accounting for nearly 16 per cent of the country's tea market at an estimated cost of $US4.9 million (VND103 billion) after the first two months of this year, according to department head Ly Quoc Hung.
He added that more than 17 thousand tonnes of tea, including green and herbal tea, were last year exported to Pakistan, at total estimated cost of approximately $US32 million (VND672 billion).
During the meeting, participants discussed plans on pricing, quality, payment methods and contracts fulfilment, for tea products in order to maximise the benefits to the two nations' enterprises.
In accordance with the event, MOIT will soon establish close co-operation with agents in Pakistan to solve the problems which are currently preventing Pakistani clients from becoming involved with Vietnamese tea products.
Also at the meeting, participants discussed how to increase the trade volume between Viet Nam and Pakistan which last year recorded an increase of approximately 34 per cent compared to 2010. Pakistan gained $US156 million from exports to Viet Nam while Viet Nam earned $US168 million from exports to Pakistan.
The principal export products included garments, pepper, tea, steel, iron, chemical products and rubber.
