Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong and Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) Nogami Kotaro co-hosted the fifth Vietnam-Japan high-level dialogue on development co-operation and Vietnam-Japan Public-Private Cooperation Forum on Agriculture in a virtual format on December 12.

At the dialogue, the two sides have deeply re-evaluated the results achieved over the past several years and then adopted the contents and implementation of the Mid-term and Long-term Vision for the agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and Japan during the next period (2020-2024).

The vision contains major issues: improvement of agricultural infrastructure (including irrigation works and those supporting agricultural value chain); the support for environmental protection and response to climate change; the promotion of investment from private enterprises, application of advanced technology.

Japan will also support Vietnam in formulating policies and training high-quality human resources in agriculture while expanding pilot models and bringing the local potentials and strengths into play.

Vietnamese Minister Cuong noted that the two sides can boost two-way trade of agricultural products and promote FDI investment as Japan is a country with great and important FDA sources for Vietnam.

For his part, Japanese Minister Nogami Kotaro expressed his hope that the newly signed vision will contribute to boosting the building of the value chain and expanding investment opportunities between the two countries.

The Vietnam-Japan Public-Private Cooperation Forum on Agriculture featured the participation of representatives from 100 enterprises from both two countries.

The two ministers also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two sides on technological cooperation in irrigation and drainage as well as the protection of marine resources and responsible management of the fisheries sector.
