RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Roberto Azevedo, the World Trade Organization (WTO)'s incoming chief, expressed optimism Tuesday over relaunching the Doha Round talks. It's possible to make progress on the issue, but a lot of dialogues will be needed, the WTO director-general-elect told business event here. The upcoming WTO Bali Round of talks in December will offer a good opportunity to begin the relaunching effort, Azevedo said.

Peru’s Foreign Trade Association (ComexPeru) said Monday that Peru should continue promoting free trade agreements with India, Turkey, Israel, Russia and Arab countries as they boost non-traditional exports. ComexPeru advised Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) to increase trade negotiations and continue entering potential markets like India, which is interested in signing free trade agreement with Peru. It also noted that India has a market of over 1.2 billion people and is full of opportunities.

Japan’s entrance into the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade treaty negotiations is arguably the most important event in U.S. relations with the Asia-Pacific in the last decade. This is because the sustainability of long-term American strategic power in Asia and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s attempts to resuscitate the Japanese economy are entirely co-dependent. Japan finally entered the trade talks for hammering out the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement during the 18th round last month in the Malaysian resort of Kota Kinabalu. The delegates joined the talks on the afternoon of July 23 after Japan’s participation was cleared by the U.S. Congress. The TPP is a framework that aims to liberalize trade in the pan-Pacific region. It started as an accord that was signed in June 2005 (and took effect in May 2006) by Singapore, Brunei, Chile and New Zealand with the goal of eliminating trade tariffs virtually without exception.

The government told industry groups Monday that it is drafting proposals on lowering or eliminating tariffs for the Brunei round of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade negotiations. A total of 194 business, agriculture and other lobbying groups received a briefing from government officials on the free trade talks, which Japan joined last month, the government said.

(Reuters) - The United States won a long-running trade dispute with China on Friday when the World Trade Organization found Beijing had broken global rules by imposing anti-dumping duties on U.S. chicken broiler parts. The U.S. complaint, first raised in September 2011, was widely seen as one of a string of tit-for-tat disputes between the world's largest economies, and followed a U.S. ban on imports of Chinese cooked chicken.

KUALA LUMPUR: A public consultation session here intended to gather feedback on the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) garnered mostly hostile response from the participants. The half-day event organised by the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) attracted more than 1,000 people from non-governmental organisations, special interest groups and individuals who are concerned about Malaysia’s participation in free trade agreements.
